Questions to Ask Yourself about Becoming a Sponsor, Co-Sponsor or Sponsee

For those Seeking a Sponsor or a Co-Sponsor:

  • Why did you decided to seek a sponsor or co-sponsor?
  • When did you first consider seeking a sponsor or co-sponsor?
  • Do you want a sponsor/co-sponsor from your home group?
  • Have you ever had a sponsor or co-sponsor before?
  • How often do you want to be in contact with your sponsor or co-sponsor?
  • What benefits have you seek from having a sponsor or co-sponsor?
  • What have you done to find a sponsor or co-sponsor?
  • Why don't you have a sponsor or co-sponsor now?
  • Is there someone in your group now who you would trust to be a sponsor or co-sponsor?
    • What would keep you from asking them? 
  • Would it be easier for you to ask for a temporary sponsor or co-sponsor?
  • Does your home group promote sponsorship and co-sponsorship regularly?

For Sponsors and Co-Sponsors:

  • Do you have any sponsees or co-sponsors?
  • How do you benefit from being a sponsor or co-sponsor?
  • Where did you learn how to be a sponsor or co-sponsor?
  • Do you have a routine for your sponsee or co-sponsors?
  • How much contact do you want or need from your sponsees or co-sponsors?
  • Are you able to have good sponsorship or co-sponsorship boundaries (not trying to control or direct another's recovery/avoiding codependency)?
  • If you've been a sponsor or co-sponsor, what has proven effective to keep sponsees progressing in the program?
  • Do you understand the importance of using EAI approved literature only?
  • Have you ever felt overwhelmed by being a sponsor or co-sponsor?
    • What do you do if you are?
  • How many steps did you complete before becoming a sponsor or co-sponsor?
